In recent years, the bone materials based on titanium and its alloys have been widely used. In clinical research, the corrosion and wearof implants and the lack of osseointegrationare the two main causes for the aseptic loosening, which can eventually lead to the failure of implantation. So, it is a hotspot in the area of bone tissue engineering to prepare the high performance material. Porous tantalum has satisfactoryphysico-chemical properties and can resist the corrosion and wear, meanwhile, its biocompatibility andporous structure can significantly promotethe ingrowth of new bone and the proliferation of osteoblast, further improve the capacity ofosseointegration. The development of surface modification technology givesporous tantalum more excellent performance and function, and expands its clinical application. In this paper, the physico-chemical/biological characteristics and osseointegration of porous tantalum will be reviewed. |
